Mr Frank Foote, B A , B So., first assistant master of the Palmerston North High School, and formerly of Cardrona school, has been appointed out of 28 applicants for the position of rector of the Gisborne High School. We tender our heartiest congratulations to Mr Foote on his rapid advancement in the teaching profession. Mr R. Balch, jun , son of Mr R. Balch, of this town, was a successful competitor at the Riverton and Bluff regattas. Mr F. Dunlop was the victim of rather a nasty accident the other day. He was riding down the Powder Magazine Hill wben a motor cycle came round the corner. The horse he was riding jumped into the water channel and fell. Unfortunately Mr Dunlop's band got caught in the reins and he dragged a considerable distance with the result that the muscles and nerves of the left arm were badly torn, necessitating medical attendance. It is to be hoped that motor cyclists particularly will slow down on all dangerous portions of the roads. j The New Year honors include peer- ! ages to Sir G. Sydenham Clarke, the Hon. James Bryce, and Sir George Kemp, MP. ; a baronetcy to ViceAdmiral Sir Percy Scott; Companionship of St. Michael and St. George to Mr Leonard Stowe, Clerk of the New Zealand Parliament; and a Knight Bachelorhood to Mr W. C. Buchanan, of Now Zealand. The Hon J. A. Millar, formerly Minister of Railways, is at present in Auckland. Acting on his doctor's ad.vice, Mr Millar intends (says the Auckland Heivild) to take no part in public affairs for twelve months, other than I

business directly affecting bis constituency.

The death of the Duke of Abercorn is 'announced, at the age of 74. The second Duke of Abercorn (in the peerage of Ireland) was born in 1838, and, after taking his M. A. degree at Oxford, he married Lidy Mary Anna Gurzon, daughter of Karl Howe, in 1869. He .succeeded to the Dukedom in 1885. Previously, from 1860 to 1880, he had sat; in the House of Commons as one of the members for County Donegal. The family estates comprise some 26,000 acra?.
