MARK TWAIN IN GAOL.

One of the most amusing stories we have ' read about the famous humorist, Mark Twain, is contained in an article in the January issue of Life just to hand. It is one of a series of personal reminiscences of the great fun-maker being contributed by Mr Carlyle Smythe, who was Mark Twain's manager dnring his lectunng tour of Australasia and South Africa, ahd it tells how Mark Twain and the writer went to visit Colonel Rhodes and his fellow poli ical prisoners after the llaid, and what befell them there. This article of Mr Smythe's is one of a number of excellent contributions of the January issue of this line Australasian magazine There are, among other items in Life, a striking sketch of the career of Dr Morrison of China ; a beautifully illustrated dnscription by Charles Barrett of a very rave bir.l; a racy account of the personnel and methods of the New York police force by Mr Charles Nuttall. In the Explanation Department, the " man in the street "is briefly informed "How Turkey is Disintegrating;" " Who Sir Edward Carson is;" " What the Passion Play is," etc, etc There are several interesting features in the Science and Open Air departments, and amongst other interesting items, Dr Fi chett ends his series of Exploration articles with a brilliant account of the tragic expedition of Burke and Wiils. Iu this number tho results of Life's Prize Contest No. 1 are given, and . Life's Prize Contest No. 2, with £-3 oash for ! first prize, is announced. Life's success a3 j an Australasian magazine has been great, [sand it is due chiefly to the way in which it I caters for bu3y, intelligent peoph. Toe Js-nuary issue, now before us, is an excellent I wx^Dn'orth.
