SPORTING NOTES.

[By Peeping Ton.]

Prom present appearances there is every reason to expect that the trotting events on the L.C.J.C. programme will fill well this year, as there are several trotters in work that have already sported silk and proved themselves useful, as well as a few untried trotters that are sure to he nominated for local meetings. Gallopers are not much in evidence so far but there are a few youngsters that are likely to be nominated for the Maiden Plate and hack races. Mr A, Grant, of Shotover, owns a very nice looking bay colt by Natitoa out of a Silvermark mare, that ought to be able to gallop if size and appearance count for anything. Mr E. O’Neill is exercising a ot old Wild Wave that gives promise of being useful. She is on the small side but a string compact little mare that handles herself well. Dominion Eose is being lookea after by Mr G. Patton, who has been associated with the daughter of Eosealgier for the last two years. This mare is looking well and in good condition to commence fast work. Obsono was not long _ in_ earning a winning bracket after joining Dick McDonald’s stable. Mr Mcßride s colt is a -rood one, but has not been over lucky m his turf career so far. However, Obsono has started the season well and I predict many more successes for him if he keeps fat and well and is judiciously placed in his races. . Mr E. McDonald’s stable at Mosgiel now shelters a fairly numerous and powerful string of gallopers. San Seyero, Obsono Palette, Cashier and Mernbeck are all good stake earners, and Dick has several well bred youngsters in hand as well. Mi McDonald is to be congratulated on the progress he has made in the art of training racehorses and his stable is sure to play an important part at most of the race meetings in the South Island during the present racing season. Jimmy Begbie, formerly of Arrowtowu, rode the winner of the principal race the first day—Martist in the Mosgiel Handicap. In his race Obsono, who is now trained by E. McDonald, at once dashed _ away to the front and the issae was never in doubt, the Frankton-owned horse winning comfortably by a length from My Lawyer. In the entries for the Stewards Handicap of 1500 sovs at Christchurch, Obsono has
