Holidays over. Adieu 190 S. Weather changeable. Harvesting commenced. Poor yields expected. Disastrous earthquake in Italy and Sicily. Considered the worst catastrophe in history. t 200,000 lives lost. Bush fires raging in New South Wales. Cold snaps in Britain. Scottish express had to be dug out of the snow. Fire destroyed six shops at Blayney, N. S. W. Tommy Burns, prizo fighter, is to visit New Zealand. At the principal offices, during tho Xmas holidays 146,444 telegrams were transmitted. Twenty-five jiersons have been arrested near Connel, Ireland, on charges of cattledriving. Miners at Eroken Hill are fighting against the reduction in wages. They have been paid off. There is an all-round increase in the revenue of the Commonwealth. Seven New York city councillors and two bankers have been arrested on charges of bribery and corruption. A slaughtering record was put up a day or two ago at the Gisborne Sheepfarmers' Frozen Meat Company's works, the total reached being 3639. An amended petition praying that the recent Ohinemuri local option poll be declared void, will be heard at Waihi, on January 25. Mr C. E. Jones, motor agent, of Christchurch, was killed whilst motoring. v The total lives lost in the pearling fleet disaster Western Australia number 67, including six whites.
