COPPER AND STEEL CAN NOW BE WELDED.

VALI ABLE SECRET SAID TO HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED. The secret of welding copper on steel and other metals, tin accomplishment which has I n sought by metallurgists for years, is said to have ! n successfully performed by ,F. IVrriol Moitnol . a French engineer who has succeeded in enlisting American eapii :il to exploil his discovery. This new development of the art of welding is regarded as a most important step, and its possibilities are said to be boundless. A combination made by this process will, to a great extent. take Ihe place of solid copper in the transmitting of electricity, where il will be very welcome, on account of the high price of coppi r. and at Ihe same time it will offer no temptations to thieves, as the solid copper does. Another field in which the new combination will make itself felt is in the manufacture of cooking utensils, for the purpose of experiment, a sleel pan. lined with silver, the weld being accomplished by the newprocess. Wits subjected to a heat which would have ended the life of ~n art icle of lin or enamel and was then filled with cold water without sustaining Ihe least damage.

A plant is being equipped at Chester Pa., U.S.A., and at an early date steel ingots, billets and bars will be turned out coated with copper, aluminium, silver and bronze, j which will be rolled into sheets or I drawn into wire without disturbing Ha. union of the met;tls, the proportions being maintained throughout the operations.
