The Amateur Athletic Association will welcome the team of athletes proposed to be sent from Australasia, but will not assist financially. The Association has refused alliance with the American Athletic Union. Wra. Truscott, a well known Liverpool shipowner, has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for embezz ling £36,000. Miller, of Chicago, won the six days’ cycling contest, covering 2093 miles. Brigadier-General Kempster’s rear guard, four hundred strong, was surrounded on the 11th whilst transporting the wounded. The force was unable to reach the camp at Sherkl, but seized a villiage and held it until relieved. Thirty-five casualties are reported, including four Gordon Highlanders killed and 19 wounded. Sharp fighting took place while crossing the Bara river. A dastardly attempt was made to dynamite the German theatre at Prague while the building was full, but fortunately it was not successful. Harry Pilchera/ias“Earl Hardwicke” has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for connection with je.wellery frauds in New South Wales. Several firms refused to prosecute the prisoner. Accused prepared a lengthy statement to the effect that he was led into the position by people persisting that he was Earl Hardwicke travelling under an assumed name. He pleaded to be allowed to pay for the jewellery, and promised that he would return to England. Probate has bean granted of the will of Sir William Windeyer. The estate was sworn at under £12,000.
