The English ship Corolla, from Capetown to Tallat, put in on Friday night to repair damage occasioned by an outbreak of fire off the Australian coast. An attempt was made to reach New Zealand, but it failed owing to adverse weather. The fire broke out, while the ship was in Bass Strait, amongst the oils and paints. After four hours’ hard work it was extinguished. A fire broke cut on Friday morning on board the Glasgow barque Scotia, with a large general cargo on board, but it was extinguished before the cargo had been reached, the damage being confined to the vessel and her fittings
The London police warned the Paris authorities that a woman had crossed the English Channel with the intention of assassinating Maria Christina, Queen Regent of Spain, to avenge the execu tion of Golli, the murderer of Senor Oanovas. Acting on the warning, the detectives succeeded in arresting the woman at Parritz, near the Spanish frontier. She has been sent to a penal colony. The British troops have been withdrawn from Tirah. General Lockhart is proceeding to Fort Bara, where Generals Gaslee’s and Westraacott’s columns are expected to effect a junction with the Peshawur column on December 15.
The Indian Council will offer bills amounting to 40 lakhs of rupees for subscription. The Council require £6,000,000 within three months. Two Indian employees at Dunstratal and Golab connected with the arsenal at Rawal Pindi, in the Punjaub, 90 miles east of Peshawur, have been arrested for selling ammunition to the Pathans for the use of rebellious frontier tribesmen.
The P. and O. Company’s steamer Clyde is thiee days overdue at Malta. A tug has gone in search. A heavy sea is running in the Mediterranean. —Later. The overdue steamer Clyde has arrived at Marseilles. Lord Charles Beresford, speaking at Liverpool, advocated three years’ service in the army so as to secure large reserves. The compensation demanded by Germany from Hayti for the illegal imprisonment of Leuders -vas not obtained without a display offeree. One of the German cruisers cleared for action and half an hour before the expiration of the time fixed for paying the indemnity all the demands were conceded, and within three hours the compensation was paid. The Emperor has arranged for an imposing spectacle at Kiel on the occasion of the departure of the squadron for Kiacchaa. Later. A terrible tragedy has taken place in Paris. A workman named Carrara robbed a bank collector named La Maree, murdered him, and threw the body into a furnace. Carrara was arrested as a result of information given to the police by his wife.
