Dunedin Topics.

(lake county press correspondent.) January 27 ’96. Our city, with all the joys of the festive season subsided, has resumed its quiet state, and one and all appear to be settling down to work again in dead earnest. No doubt many of your readers will be interested to know the price of horses in the Dunedin market at the present time. I quote a few prices for their information :—Heavy draughts four to six years £22 to £27, do, eight to ten years, £ls to £2O, light and small do £8 to £l3; upstanding spring-cart horses, young and sound, £l2 to £l6 ; well-bred upstanding hacks and harness horses £l6 to £2O; hocks and harness horses, £lO to £ 14. We are to have a medical congress here shortly an,d from, what I can hoar there will be a goodly number of Australian medical men present besides a large gathering of N. Z. medicos. The query comes to my mind; Will the subject of the present]exorbitant scales of charges or doctor’s fees, be brought under discussion ? The cry of the N.Z. public is the excessive charges made by a large proportion of doctors, and it is high time something was done in the regulation of fees, even if by compulsion. Bishop Luck, whose death at Auckland on Thursday morning is announced was 55 years of age. He came of a Protestant family who, but his father, became converted to theChuch of Rome and was, on the death of his wife, accepted os a priest. . A memorial service in connection with the death of the Bishop was held at St. Josephs on Saturday. Father MacKay, of Oamaru, was the celebrant. All the clergy of the diocese were present, Prior Vaughan assisting. Sympathetic references were made to the deceased prelate and the “ Dead March in Saul ” was played by she organist, the cathedral choir chanting the Gregorian Mass. The monument in memory of the stewardesses who, whilst unselfishly performing their duties, lost theirlives on the night of the wreck of the Wuirarapa, is now in position in the Northern Cemetery, and occupying the corner angle on the left hand aide of the entrance, is the first to meet the eye of the visitor. The monument is of white marble on a granite base. X see that the Premier’s attention has teen drawn to the long hours and ar duous duties of stewardesses on board intercolonial steamers, and to the fact that the number of stewardesses is disproportionately small when compared with the number of stewards. He has promised to bring the matter under the notice of steamship owners and that due inquiry will be made. This is not before time either. There was some very good dividends at the Stratford races, and no doubt “Johnny Armstrong ” was very much in evidence to cause such “ divies.” They were £2, £2O 14s, £8 13s, £l7 9s, £2l 7s, £22 13s, £4 14s, and £9 19s. And yet the public persist in trying to pick them. We have got many ‘ ■ Know you know ” people here, and in all probability you have some also, because they are not scarce, but I guess the jocks had the advantage over them at Stratford. Racing is slowly but sadly getting ruined by what may be termed “ Brats of Boys.”
