UPPER SHOTOVER AND SKIPPERS.
( From our oitm Correspondent.} There is some probability that the Shotover Terrace Co., will ultimately bring in a large water race from Skippers, to sluice the terrace into the river, whether the Co. are so disgusted with it that they are determined to put it but of sight, or whether they have an idea that it will pay, I have not heard nor dvrst I presume to enquire in either case it will be good for the district; for if the Terraoe did not pay it is just possible that there is plenty of other ground that will. The Nugget and Cornish are getting up their new machinery, so that in the coming summer it may give a good account of itself with its increase of capital. I have had the pleasure of reading Mr Ulrich's report of the keep of the Provinceandlshouldsayasawholeitisavery good idea of the matter, considering the extremely limited time of the inspection; I consider that it is unfair to both Mr Ulrich and the quartz interest, that such a hasty visit should have been made, as his opinion will form the groundwork of non-praetical men and in many instances will do serious wrong. He has laid down the rule in all crushing machines, that they must come up to the Clunes standard, perhaps as a whole he could not have done better; but in Victoria there are many large and profitable companies who pay no attention to Clunes style of doing these things. Mr Ulrich has also laid great stress on the mullock reef or rather mullock on the reef, but your correspondent can mention numerous good reeefa in Bendigo, Castlemaine, Tauren-
gower, -'Dayieiford; and even' Clunes itself; so that should anywise distract the minds of quartz speculators here. It is to be- hop<id*that-*heßeport will strengthen confidence in our quartz mines. ••-* u.ujyti
