At (he annual general meeting of the subscribers ; of,the Public Library, the Secretary read the following ANNUAL HtPuRT. In retiring from office your Committee beg to present the annual report and financial statement for the seventh year of the Library, The last annual meeting was postponed tothe'lst July, ten months ago, Bunging that by that time .they wmlrd -have aA/answer froin the t« .Uwwr application f«r a subsidy of ,£l6O. Which the late member for the district assured them had been promised. A letter dated 16th Uee, 1874, was at last received stating' thatlthe Govcrnineht; subsidy? extended only to places where no such institutions existed previously, and "the application of this flot be entertained. '1 his is much to oe regretted as the revenue which should have been legitimately expended in the,purchase ,of books has been necessarily devoted to the) payraeht'ofi the old building debt and,current pxpensec. In conclusion the Committee think that thwr during the past year have been successful. The debt has been reduced to a minimum, and the Institution has been sustained in its previous degree of efficiency and,, hope for such further continuance. - I '■
