Frederick Pavitt, late steward of the Church Property Christchurch, was arrested lately on' a charge of embezzlement. It is ruihored that is defalcations amount io between £s,oooand£7,ooo. ‘ Pavitt was brought up at the Resident' Magistrate’s Court this ■ miortiing, charged with the embezzlement of £797 from the funds of the Church Property Estate. The prisoner had filled the position of steward for nine years, and. his . salary of late was £4OO per annum. . .The defalcations were found out while he was absent from 'his duties owing to illness. The prisoner appeared to feel his position very acutely. - Prior to this event, he was held in high respect by all who knew him. He has several brothers in Canterbury, all of whom are greatly respected.
