PHELAN RELIEF COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the Phelan Relief Committee was held at the Town Hall last evening ; present—Messrs Dungan (in the chair). Gow, Maher, Munyard, Moran, Boban, and Dnggan (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the inward correspondence read and received. The latter consisted of a communication from Mr M'Laughlin, of Dookie, North Victoria, thanking the committee for their kindness to Mrs Phelan. Messrs Maher and Duggan reported that they had, in accordance with a resolution of the committee, interviewed the Rev. Father Martin, of Hokitika, relative to the placing of the childven in the Nelson Orphanage, and that the reverend father had expressed his opinion that it was the most desirable course, under the circuinstauces. Mr Munyard was of opinion that immediate action in this respect was necessary, as, by referring the matter from one to another and adjourning the question from meeting to meeting, the Committee were simply postponing a question with which eventually they must deal, and still the children had to be provided for meanwhile. He moved " That a sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs Gow, Maher, Dungan, and the Secretary, be appointed to take the necessary steps to have the children of the late John Phelan placed in the Nelson .Orphanage, the said sub-committee having full power to act in carrying out this resolution." Mr Moran coincided with this view and seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The sub-committee appointed to report on a suitable site for establishing Mrs D. Phelan in business brought .up their report, which was received.

Mos6s relative io some premises oif which he is the owner. The motion was carried. The Secretary and Treasurer were instructed to prepare a balance : sheetj and submit same at next meeting of the Committee, The Chairman, after pointing out the great interest that the Hev. Father Martin, of Hokitika, took in the maibtetf and that the committee would be materially assisted by his advice, moved " That the Secretary, he instructed to write t'b the Rev. Father Martin intimating that the Committee were" making arrangements to get the children of the late John Phelan into St. Mary's Orphanage, immediately I alsOj enclosing him a copy of the resolution passed relative there l to, and soliciting his co-operation." Mr Moran seconded the motion* which was carried unanimously; On the motion of Mr Gow, seconded by Mr Moran, it was resolved that the Secretary call a' full meeting of the Committee by circular, at an early date, and that the attendance of every member be secured, if possible, so as t 6 pass the balance sheet for publication, and conclude the business of the Committee generally.
