Kiritehere.

(FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Two of our settlers, Messrs Saunders aud Kleine, have been purchasing cattle from the Maoris lately, thus making a start on their sections with a small hard. Since my last letter Mr J. Willison and family have taken up their residence here. Mr Willison has started butchering, whilst Mrs Willison is keeping a boarding house at Marakopa Heads. I leirn that Mr and Mrs Hally and family will arrive shortly to take up their residence on their sections. Would-be settlers are at present in search of land in this district, and are inspecting the reserves that are to be thrown open for selection early in March. There is a strong demand for land in rhe Kawhia County, and it is time that steps were taken to acquire some of the blocks of native land that are lying idle and blocking settlement and tbe progress of the district. The sports held at Marakopa Heads on New Year’s Day were a decided success, the result of which will be that next year’s gathering will be awaited with keen interest. After paying all expenses there will be a credit balance of £4, which will be carried forward for next year. The committee was placed in a rather awkward position by the Maoris failing to supply the public with meals as was arranged before hand. The natives only gave notice on tbe Saturday be* fore the sports of the fact, and tbe result was that the committee had no time to make other arrangements, but Mr Willison promptly came to the rescue. To avoid this mistake again happening, the committee have decided to cater in future. While Mrs Willison was attending to tbe booth some miscreants broke into her house and helps 1 themselves to whatever they could lay hands on, taking all sorts of eatables, after which they broki open her box is, taking numerous articles there'rim. W.e sincerely hops that these sort ot cattle will not stray to our district very often. The robberies caused great indignation.
