Axemen's Carnival

TO BE HELD AT OPARAU. A meeting of those interested in the holding of »□ Axemen’s Carnival wag heid at Oparau on Friday last, a good number attending, Mr A. Symons presiding. It was decided to hold a carnival at Opirau during March, on a date to be fixed. .Tbe following officers were elected : —Patron, Mr H. J. Greenslade, M.H.R. ; president, Mr A. W. Elliott ; vice presidents, Messrs W. Sobye, T. B. Scott and C. Clarson ; secretary, Mr J. Prentice ; treasurer, Mr A. Jourdain ; starter, Mr A. Symons; general committee, Measra J. Mo watt, Jaa. Nojuan, J. and H. Rindalt, H. and A. Schriebor, W. and G. Vernon, T. Wightman, W. Harris, E. Nolan, O. Spurting, J. Wilson, H. Russell, R. and T. Anderson, G. H. Mackenzie, E. Edgecombe, J. M'Dinald, T. New ton, H. Armstrong, W. H. Armstrong, O. Perham, R. Carnahan, E. Pearce, E. 11. Symona, H. M‘Chesney, "W. Coe, H. Wade, 0. Tynan, with power to add to their number; gatekeeper Mr O. Spurling. A further meeting was held on Wednesday, when tbe date of the carnival was fixed for Friday, March 23rd Tbe meeting appointed the following additional officers :—Timekeeper, Mr Jonathan ; handicappers, Messrs T. Scott, Crotty and A. Symons ; executive committee, Messrs A. Symcns, T. Scott, J. Grotty, A. Joardam, H. Randall, W. H. Armstrong, ana the secretary ; dance committee, Messrs H. Armstrong, jßussell, Jourdain, S. Stewart, Boesen and Prentice. It was resolved that the bookmakers fee be 10s ; to call tenders for the privileges; that the secretary draw out subscription fists. The following programme was drafted, (he competitors to be residents within a radius of .20 miles : 100 Yards Handicap, Maiden Chop, Three-legged Race, Handicap Saw, 220 Yards Handicap, Oparau Handicap Chop, Driving Cricket Bill, Underhand Chop, Boys’ Race, Running and Chopping Rice, Committee Race, Potato Race.
