RAILWAY PICNIC

LARGE NUMBER ATTEND* VERY ENJOYABLE OUTING. Favoured by beautiful weather, the eighteenth annual picnic of the Te Kuiti Railway staff and Transport Workers was most successful on Sunday. This year the committee decided on a change of venue to Ongarue, which events proved a popular decision. The scene at the platform before the train left was one of gaiety. After the departure the children s committee, under the leadership of Mr. D. Roger, commenced their task of seeing that the youngsters enjoyed themselves, by distributing free lollies, fruit, toys and ice creams. En route the train picked up many passengers, and on arrival at the picnic grounds a full load was aboard. After the picnickers had partaken of lunch, the lengthy programme was commenced. The various races were well contested, especially the Railway Sheffield and the McLeod Cup. The winner of the Railway Sheffield, Mr. Fred Norton, was received with applause. Fred has given this race a "go" several times, but he has always met someone just a shade too good. This time, however, he gave no one else a look in. The winner of the McLeod Cup, Mr. Stretton, of Waimiha, had to go flat out to win the tronhy. The starter was Mr. A. Meredith, and the judges were Messrs. P. Patton and W. Williams. Mr. J. Graham was the capable handicapper. The children's events were run off very efficiently—great credit is due to the children's committee for the manner in which they handled their task. A very busy time was experienced by those in charge of the ice cream stall, Messrs. A. Mitchell, W. Parcell, K. Hunkin and W. Murdock. From the time the stall opened until closing time they scarcely had a minute's peace. The renderings of the Municipal Band, who were in attendance at the picnic, were greatly appreciated.
