SOUTH AUCKLAND SHIELD

MANIAPOTO’S CRICKET SUCCESS. WIN OVER TAUMARUNUI. Maniapoto won the South Auckland Shield on Saturday last. Playing Taumarunui, the holders of the Shield, at Taumarunui, they gained the victory by the margin of 56 runs on the first innings. A draw was narrowly averted, only 15 minutes being left to play when Taumarunui were dismissed. Conditions were cold and squally, with occasional showers. Because of the weather play did not commence until 11.45 when Maniapoto, having won the toss, went in to bat. Boulton and Smith opened to the bowling of McAlister and McLeay. The runs came slowly at first, though Boulton occasionally hit out for* the boundary. When 37 runs were up he cocked a ball up in the air and was caught. The dinner adjournment came just after Ronaldson had joined Smith. After the resumption the newcomer, in trying to hook a ball from F. Schroeder, was clean bowled.

Seccombe was Smith’s next partner. Shaping aggressively, he tried to knock the bowiers off their length. Heavy rain caused an adjournment for a few minutes; then a brilliant catch by O’Halloran on the boundary terminated Seccombe’s innings. Smith was still plodding along in the knock that meant so much to Maniapoto. Kinder fell early to an Ibw decision; Dinsdale hit a four, but a couple of balls after was caught at square leg. The followed the finest partnership of the match—Smith and Arneil. Arneil got his eye in from the start and waded into the bowling, while Smith, though more cautious, added his quota. Arneil’s .score of 46 included two sixes and six fours. Owing to F. Sehroeder’s beautiful throw in Smith was run out. Then Arneil shortly after skied a ball to Crocker, and the tail were left to carry on with the score at 138. Evans was bowled for a single, but Corin and Knock got together to hurry the total along to 170, when Corin went out leg before. Rodger, Maniapoto’s eleventh man, hit a two, and then was caught, and the innings closed for 172. The wickets were evenly divided between the Taumarunui bowlers and the home team’s fielding was sound. Taumarunui went in a little before 4 p.m. with rain threatening, and Evans dismissed McKinnon in his first over. Rain forced the adjournment of play, and soon after the recommencement Ronaldson brilliantly caught Smith off Arneil at square leg. Owing to having to commence work O’Halloran had to retire when he had hit up 12, but Winger and H. Schroeder followed in a partnership that took some time to shift. Maniapoto were beginning to feel worried when a fast good length ball from Evans laid Winger’s middle stump low.

Dinsdale was then brought on to replace Arneil, and very soon had collected two wickets Crocker knocked a ball from him softly into Corin’s hands, and H. Schroeder played a ball on to his wicket. Once again things looked brighter for Maniapoto, but along came J. Griffin who, aided by Manson, raised the score to 97. An appeal was made by Taumarunui against the light about 6 p.m. but was not allowed. Just after that Manson went out lbw to a delivery from Knock. Griffen followed him to the pavilion, clean bowled by Ronaldson, without any change in the score. McAlister and F. Schroeder were batting together when Corin was brought on. In his first over he dismissed McAlister. McLeay, Taumarunui’s last man, joined F. Schroeder at 6.10 p.m. He hit a two off Corin, but the bowler in his next over obtained the tenth wicket and the match concluded with 15 minutes to go. The wickets were well distributed among the bowlers, Evans, Dinsdale and Corin each securing two. Evans bowled nine no balls, Dinsdale one, and Rodger 1, and byes amounted to seven. Behind the wickets Smith was sound, though very prone to knock off the bails before getting the ball. In the field Maniapoto were good, not a catch being missed.
