PERSONAL
The engagement is announced of Ivy May Pearl, eldest daughter of Mrs. W. Smith, Hinerangi Street, Te Kuiti, to Willis, only son of Mr; W. Walker, Aharoa Road, Te Kuiti. The death took place last Thursday at her home, Te Kumi, of Miss Mildred Moerua, the granddaughter of Moerua Natauhira, a well-known chief of the Maniapoto tribe. A tangi is being held at her grandfather’s pa, Te Koraka. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the. late Mr. R. W. Neal was carried by the Waitomo County Council yesterday. Each member of the Council spoke to the motion, and paid tribute to the late Mr. Neal’s fine work for the district, his knowledge of farming interests, and his striking courage and lack of thought for himself in his last illness. Mr. Lee said that the late Mr. Neal had done his very best for the Council and the district —possessed of a clear and business mind, he could take a leading part in any discussion that came before the Council, and his opinion always merited the fullest consideration. In the late Mr. Neal he had lost a personal friend and one who had been of great help to him as chairman of the Council, and the ratepayers had lost a Councillor of special ability—willing to help, not only ratepayers, but anyone who required assistance. Mr. Lee then read a letter written to him by the late Mr. Neal shortly before his death, asking him to convey to the Council and staff his appreciation of the consideration and kindnesses extended to him during the whole of the time he was a member of the Council, and stating that his association with them carried nothing but pleasant memories. Cr. Jones said the King Country had in Mr. Neal lost one of its most prominent public men, and he, who had known Mr. Neal ever since he came to the King Country, had lost one of his best friends. Other Councillors spoke of the late Mr. Neal’s merit as a Councillor and colleague, and his fortitude in his last illness was referred to several times as being absolutely wonderful.
