PIO PIO EWE FAIR

BEST SALE OF SEASON. i Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd. Te Kuiti, report having had their annual Ewe Fair at Pio Pio on Thursday, when they penned 5000 ewes on account of breeders throughout the Pio Pio, Aria and Mahoenui districts. The bulk of the sheep were of good quality and were penned in excellent order. There was a large attendance and we have to report a most successful sale, this being the best Fair of the season in the Northern King Country. The market opened with strong competition and from the outset it was clear that for the top lines buyers were prepared to go to high figures. Our top price for young ewes was £2 5s 6d for a nice line of 2-tooths for Mr. L. Verry, of Mangaotaki, this lot being sold in conjunction with Messrs. Dalgety and Co. The top price for 4- ewes was secured by Mr. S. C. Ronaldson’s ewes which made the good price of 375; other good lines were Mr. E. Hansen’s at 36s Id, Mr. N. Ronaldson’s at 365, Mrs. Higginson at 36s 9d, Mr. W. G. Bilton’s at 36s Bd, while Mr. W. Gellatly’s line of 4 and 5-year-olds made 34s sd. The range of prices was: Good 2tooth ewes £2 4s to £2 5s 6d, medium sorts 38s to 395, while small 2tooths made 33s 6d to 365; small 4tooths sold from 37s 3d to 395, while mixed aged ewes made 31s to 37s 6d; best 4-year ewes under very keen competition ranged in value from 36s to 375; best 5-year ewes made from 31s to 335; a good line from Mr. R. Black, sold in conjunction with Messrs Dalgety and Co. reaching this figure. Good 5-year ewes made 28s to 30s 6d; good 4 and 5- ewes 34s to 34s sd; good 6-year-olds ranged from 24s to 265, while sound mouthed aged ewes made 20s to 225; aged and unsound ewes made from 14s to 17s 6d; one-shear Romney rams sold te 7J gns; aged Romney rams 1J to 3 gns, and fullmouthed Southdown rams 3 gns.

Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having held their annual Ewe Fair at Pio Pio on Thursday, 11th February. Well over the advertised number of ewes were yarded and we report a most satisfactory sale. Very few outside buyers were present, only a few lines being sent out of the district. The demand for good genuine lines of 4 and 5-year-old ewes and younger sheep was particularly good. Aged sheep were not keenly sought after and prices for these were much on a par with recent sales. Top price for 4-year-old ewes was obtained for the annual draft of Mr. Chas. Lowe, of Mangaotaki, whose line realised 375; 4-year-olds on account of Mr. L. G. Verry, Mangaotaki, mad e36s 9d, and a similar price was obtained for Mr. A. Higginson’s line. For Mr. W. G. Bilton’s entry of 4-year-olds 36s 8d was realised, whilst good lines sold on account of Mr. T. M. Houghton, of Wairere, and Mr. D. O’Donoghue, of Mahoenui, realised 34s 3d and 355, respectively. Top price for 5-year-olds was obtained for a very nice line on account of Marshall and Tipping, Paemako. These made the good price of 34s 3d. A good line of 5-year ewes sold on account of Mr. J. W. Hunter, Paemako, made 32s 6d, whilst a line of 504 5-year-olds on account of Messrs. Loughnan and Barber, sold in conjunction with Messrs. Abraham and Ltd., at 31s. Messrs. Alderson Bros.’ annual draft of 5-year-old ewes realised 31s 9d. For Messrs. R. Boddy and Co.’s annual draft of 351 5-year-old ewes 30s 6d was paid, and 34s was realised for Mr. W. A. Thom’s line of 4 and 5-year old ewes, sold in conjunction with Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd; 5-year ewes for Messrs. Sargeant and Co. realised 32s 4d, whilst their 6-year-old ewes made the good price of 29s 9d. An exceptionally nice line of 4 and 5-year-old ewes sold on account of Mr. R. Black, Pio Pio, and offered in conjuncion with Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., realised 32s to 335.

For Mr. Keith Walkers’s entry of 2-tooth ewes the top price of £2 6s 6d was paid, whilst a good line of 405 2-tooth ewes on account of Messrs. Alderson Bros., Aria, sold at £2 5s 6d. The same price was obtained for Mr. L. G. Verry’s entry of of 2-tooth ewes, and £2 4s 6d for the entries of Mr. R. Hill and Mr. A. Higginson; 2-tooth ewes from Puketiti Station realised up to £2 4s, and also an entry from Mr. C. E. Jackson, Pio Pio, made £2 ss. Quotations: Best 4-year-old ewes 35s to 375; medium 31s 4d to 34s 2d; best 4 and 5-year-old ewes 31s to 335; medium 28s to 30s 8d; light conditioned 23s to 275; best 6-year-old ewes 23s to 29s 9d; others 17s to 21s 8d; f.m. ewes, good sorts, 17s to 21s; aged 11s to 15s 6d; medium 4 and 6-tooth ewes 34s 9d; medium m.a. ewes 325; best 2-tooth ewes £2 5s to £2 7s; medium £2 to £2 4s; others 35s to 38s 7d.
