SPRINGBOK AND MAORI
A BURNING QUESTION. WHAKATANE DISCRIMINATION. A great deal of heartburning has been caused among members of the Maori race owing to the attitude of South African Rugby teams toward native players. The coming visit of the Springboks next season aroused the question afresh and much heated discussion has occurred as to whether Maoris will be included in All Black test teams and whether an allnative team will meet the Springboks. An Aucklander on a visit to Whakatane last week was considerably intrigued when he was informed that one local business man had refused to have Maoris as his customers, and had a notice to that effect displayed in his premises. "The action of • the business man concerned may or may not have been justified," he said. "I cannot express an opinion, but a member of the local Borough Council seemed to think the position quite in order. However, in view of the coming of the Springboks, I think the fact is interesting."
