USE FOR TENNIS BALLS
DRIVING LIONS INTO DENS. Visitors to Taronga Park, Sydney, have been puzzled by seeing the keeper throw tennis balls at the lions in the new pit. The explanation is simple. The lions used to pass the time away by dragging the turf from the base of “the mountain” in the centre of the enclosure in an endeavour to pull out the steel which held the cement together. To protect the base, the zoo authorities covered it with cement, and then coloured the surface in different tints to represent the six States of Australia.
Then a difficulty arose. When the keepers had to clean the pit, they used to throw pebbles at the lions to drive them into their dens. It was found that the pebbles damaged the new, coloured cement work. To solve the problem the superintendent gave the keepers a supply of tennis balls. The use of tennis balls to drive lions into their dens is quite effective.
