UNION AWARDS
EFFECT ON POWER BOARDS. FUSE REPLACEMENT ANOMALY. The replacing of fuses will cost consumers 9s if the new award filed by the Electrical Employees’ Union is approved. This was pointed out at the Waitomo Power Board meeting on Monday on receipt of the award desired by that Union from the Clerk of Awards.
The engineer pointed out that a minimum of two hours’ overtime was provided for under the proposed award. Thus if the faultman was called out on a Sunday, even for the quarter of an hour required to replace a fuse, it appeared he would have to be paid double time for two hours’ work. Mr. Simms said that consumers should know that with all these rules and regulations it was going to be difficult to get anything done. Mr. Simms reported on a conference of Power Boards held in Auckland at the end of last month to consider the question of awards. There it had been decided to register an industrial union of employers covering Power Boards, and to endeavour to obtain two awards for Power Board workers, one covering the clerical workers, and another the remainder of the staff.
The chairman, secretary and engineer were appointed to consider the award desired by the Electrical Employees’ Union, and send any objections forward to the Arbitration Court sitting on August 3.
