SOME USEFUL HINTS.
Quite a percentage of calls for mechanical first aid are occasioned by battery trouble. If car owners would have their batteries tested regularly every two weeks and see that the generating rate is correct, battery trouble could be almost entirely eliminated. After a new cylinder head gasket has been installed the head should be tightened evenly and with care. If the head is of aluminium it should first be tightened cold. The engine should then be warmed tff normal operating temperature and allowed to cool, then tightened again. If the head is checked again for tightness after 500 miles of service there should be no danger of the gasket blowing out. The motorist should realise that an incorrect idling adjustment of the carburettor tends to waste fuel. Many times when the idling adjustment is so low as to permit the engine to stall when the accelerator is released, the driver makes compensation by the release of the throttle. Usually this compensation is overdone, with the result that the engine idles too fast and consumes an excessive amount of petrol.
