LOAN PROPOSALS
RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED. SEALING SCHEME SLIGHTLY AMENDED. The resolutions that the Council apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to borrow money for reconditioning and extending water reticulation and for sealing of certain streets were carried last evening at the Borough Council meeting. No objection was received against either loan, and the adoption of the resolutions was unanimous in both cases. A minor amendment was made to the streets sealing loan. Previously provision had been made to tar-seal the Esplanade from Massey Street to Lawrence Street, but Cr. Rundle was of the opinion that, even though Somerville’s Road had been metalled, the strip between the bowling green and Mangarino Road received very little traffic. After Cr. Low had stressed the necessity of sealing the sides of the road in Sheridan and Taupiri Streets'.to prevent the existing seal from breaking at the exposed edges, the Council decided that the sealing of the Esplanade between Mangarino Road and the bowling green be not proceeded with under the loan proposals, but that the money be used in sealing the sides of the present seal in Taupiri and Sheridan Streets. Cr. Dobson remarked that he would like to see this portion of the Esplanade sealed out of revenue in the near future. The amended schedule of roads to be sealed with the £SOOO loan, therefore, is as follows. The work is to be done in order of urgency:—Esplanade, Mangarino Road to Lawrence Street; Carroll Street, King Street to George Street; Carroll Street, Railway goods entrance to Awakino Road; George Street and Eketone Street to Hospital entrance; Taupiri Street, Alexander Street to King Street and from Sheridan Street to Lawrence Street; Tawa Street, full length; Lawrence Street, full length; Te Kuiti Road, Lawrence Street to Borough boundary; Waitete Road, Lawrence Street to saleyards road; shoulders of existing seal on Taupiri and Sheridan Streets. The resolution to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to raise the sum of £21,200 for the purpose of extending and reconditioning the water reticulation was carried without any amendment.
