WAITANGURU
VALEDICTORY. (Own Correspondent.) The residents of Waitanguru held an enjoyable evening on Saturday last when Mr. Ray Dew was the guest of the evening. There was a fair attendance in spite of it being Easter holidays and many residents and friends away. Dancing was indulged in, Mr. Lafferty being sole musician and Mr. Frederickson M.C. Mr. V. Ledger gave a fine rendering of the old favourite song “Mother Machree,” and was encored heartily. Several community songs ,etc., were enjoyed by those present. Visitors were from Mairoa, Mangaotaki and Mangaohae. Supper was served early and then the presentation speech was given by Mr. Frederickson in which he, on behalf of the friends of Mr. Ray Dew, who has taken up new work in the Huntly and Taupiri districts with the Herd Testing Association, .wished him success and prosperity in his new sphere. In speaking of the appreciation the district had in Ray’s interests in sport, the speaker said he had been secretary of the tennis club and hall committees and helped to further the interests of all organisation pertaining to sport. It was a pleasure to wish him good luck in his new line of work. Mr. Jury then spoke, particularly on behalf of the cricketerk, and endorsed Mr. Frederickson’s remarks in appreciation of Mr. Ray Dew’s interest in local affairs as a willing helper in furthering sport. The singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” was followed by three cheers. “Ray” responded in a neat and heartfelt speech in which he thanked all friends for their good wishes and token of goodwill, and said whatever he had done socially he had got a lot of pleasure from it. The next social function Will be the basketball dance on 29th inst. O’Rourke’s orchestra will be in attendance. Tennis. The Waitanguru Tennis Club held a tournament on Saturday. There were eighteen players. The president, Mr. Frederickson, and secretary, Miss Buckley, got the business of the day in hand and started the play about 11 a.m. Luncheon and afternoon tea were served in the hall. The results were: — First round.—E. Mather and R. Dew lost to M. Buckley and G. Higgins, 48—50. Second round.—E. Dew and Ron Brier beat M. Verry and W. Lowrie, 50—46; Mrs. Murray and D. Brier lost to Miss Murray and Mr. E. Brier, 39—50. Third round.—Mr. Brier and Miss Murray lost to E. Dew and Ron Brier, 38—50; Ivy Brier and E. Buckley lost to J. Lowrie and D. Frederickson, 51—53; G. Higgins and M. Buckley lost to G. Brier and E. Bilton, 40—50. Semi-finals.—E. Bilton and G. Brier beat J. Lowrie ano D. Frederickson, 50—47. Final.—E. Bilton and G. Brier beat E. Dew and Ron Brier, 50—42.
