FRISCO SERVICE
TO BE DISCONTINUED. CANADIAN LINE MAY GO. The discontinuance of the Union Royal Mail Line between Sydney, Wellington, and San Francisco is announced by the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited, to take effect with the arrival in Sydney of the Maunganui in November and the Makura in December next. The decision has been made after some years of heavy loss in this service, and emphasises that private enterprise cannot compete with high State subsidy. Under existing conditions it is not practicable to continue the present service or to make replacement with more modern tonnage. The future of the Canadian Australasian Line between Vancouver, Auckland and Sydney, as has already been stated by its president, Sir Edward Beatty, is similarly threatened. NO SURPRISE IN LONDON. AT COMPANY’S DECISION. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 11.55 a.m.) London, April 15. The news of the Union Line’s discontinuance of the Sydney-San Francisco service caused no surprise in London. It is thought that the announcement at the present moment is interpreted as an effort to hasten the inter-Governments’ decisions regarding assistance to British lines. •The Associated Press is informed, however, that the company’s announcement is not likely to yield any immediate result.
