STRANGE THINGS IN GEAR BOXES

BITUMEN AND A BENT TIN. Mechanics discover some strange things in motor car engines at times, quite apart from the ordinary results of neglect. Into a garage not far from Wellington one day a light car was taken. The gear-box was noisy. The mechanic assigned to the job discovered that there was about half an inch of bitumen, hardened, in the bottom of the gear-box. A chisel and a hammer were necessary to remove the bitumen. The only reason that could be ascribed for the presence of the bitumen was that someone, to silence the noise, had poured bitumen into the gears as a temporary expedient. In the bottom of the gear-box of a large- car a mechanic found the bent half of a tobacco tin, though the owner declared that he had never touched the mechanism since he bought the car second-hand. He had always heard a strange tinkle and the investigation yielded the tin.
