NOMINATIONS CLOSE

ELECTION IN WAITOMO. THREE CANDIDATES IN FIELD. The nomination of candidates for the general election closed at noon to-day, and three have been received to contest the Waitomo seat. The names are:— Walter James Broadfoot, National candidate. John Jones, Labour candidate. John Huia Penniket, Independent Country Party candidate. These three candidates have been pursuing their campaigns with vigour, all three having by now delivered policy speeches in the town and have covered much of the countrv area. Several others had been rumoured to be considering standing earlier in the year, but during the past two months or so it has been evident that the field was limited to these three. Rumours have been current that Mr. Jones was likely to pull out, but tnese were indignantly denied by the candidate. Any person qualified may, with his consent, be nominated as a candidate for any district, by not less than two electors of that district. No elector may nominate more than one candidate. Each candidate, or some person in his behalf, must deposit £lO with the returning officer upon nomination. If the total number of votes received by an unsuccessful candidate is less than one-fourth the number received by the successful candidate, the unsuccessful candidate must forfeit his deposit. In other cases the deposit is returned. Any candidate wishing to withdraw must do so before the closing of nominations. Waimarino Electorate. Mr. J. Georeretti, Independent candidate for Waimarino, announces his withdrawal owing to medical advice. This leaves the contest between Mr. F. Langstone, Labour, and Mr. C. A. Boles, National Government. When interviewed, Mr. Georgetti stated that it was a matter of the deepest regret and disappointment to him that he was unable to continue with his campaign, but in view, of his doctor's opinion he was unfortunately left with no option but to withdraw. Mr. Georgetti said that he wished to express his sincere thanks to all those who had supported him in his campaign up to the present, and he was extremely, sorry that he could not continue.

"The contest," said Mr. Georgetti, "will now resolve itself into one between Mr. Boles as the National candidate, and Mr. Langstone, the Labour candidate, and I earnestly hope that all those who have been good enough to .honour me by their support will now give their support and backing to Mr. Boles. Unfortunately my medical report is such that it is not possible for me personally to take an active part in the campaign, but I shall give my support to Mr. Boles and I trust that all those who' have supported me will do likewise."
