PARTY POSITION
IN LAST PARLIAMENT. SEVEN RETIREMENTS. When Parliament was dissolved a few weeks ago the state of parties in the House of Representatives was as follows: Coalition party 45 Labour party 24 Democrat party 2 Country party 1 Independents 6 Mr. Speaker 1 Total .. .... 79 The full House of Representatives consists of 80 members, 76 representing European electorates and four Maori electorates. Late in last session the death occurred of Mr. J. Connolly, Government member for Mid-Canterbury, but on account of the closeness of the general election a by-election was not held, this being the reason for the total number of members making un the House on dissolution being shown at 79.
