BOWLING AND CROQUET

CLUBS COMMENCE SEASON. LARGE CROWD AT OPENING. A crowd of approximately 120 players and spectators were prefent when the Te Kuiti Bowling and Croquet Clubs opened their season on Saturday last. Visiting bowl.ng rinks were present from Taupiri, Te Awamutu, Awaldno and Otoroha'nga, while the Te Kuiti Tennis Club was represented by its president, Mr. Farrer. Mr. S. Baddeley opened the 1935 season. During his speech he referred to the fact that the Bowling Club was beginning with about 30 new members, and he hoped that further recruits would join up during the next few weeks. Mrs. Baddeley was then called upon to throw the first jack, inaugurating the bowling season, and Mr. Baddeley played the first hoop to inaugurate the croquet season. In the favourable weather a splendid day’s sport on the bowling green resulted. Games with the visiting rinks provided some close finishes — some sixteen or so players received their initiation into the game, and soon showed keen interest. At the conclusion of the day’s sport Messrs. Waring (Taupiri), McInnes and Noonan (Te Awamutu), Brown (Awakino), and Murray Pratt (Awakino) extended their (;hanks for the hospitality accorded to them, and wished the Te Kuiti Club every success in the coming season. Three cheers were given for the visitors in rousing style. Croquet Club. The Croquet Club also anticipate a good season, several new members having signified their ; intention of joining. Quite a good crowd of ladies were present at the opening, including visitors from Otorohanga. The following are the winners of the competitions played during the afternoon. A Trophy: Mrs. Jacob; B trophy: Mrs. Law. Clock Golf: Mrs. Pickering; consolation: Mrs. Haines. Numbers: Mrs. Hawkins (Otorohanga); consolation: Mrs. Rogers. Croquet Trail: Mrs. O Connell; consolation: Mrs. Garlick.
