HOSPITAL RATING

/INEQUITABLE SYSTEM." While the conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was in session last week a meeting was held of representatives of the union and the New Zealand Counties' Association to discuss the question of hospital rating. The president (Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P.) reported that after'full deliberation the following" resolution had been passed: "That the present system of hospital taxation is inequitable because the burden rests too heavily on the ratepayers, and because those who benefit most contribute least towards the cost. The committee believes that provision for. hospital finance should be compulsory and universal. It recommends that the Counties' Association and the Farmers' Union should set up committees to meet a committee of the Hospital Association to discuss the details of any proposed scheme and with power to appoint a qualified investigator to prepare a report." The suggestions made in the resolution were adopted by the conference.
