DISCONTENT IN GERMANY

THE JEWS AS BUFFERS. TO DISTRACT PEOPLE'S . ATTENTION. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 1.20 p.m.) ~ London, July 22. The Manchester Guardian's Berlin correspondent says the anti-Semitic campaign is a desperate attempt to divert public attention from economic realities. The collapse of foreign trade and the failure of Dr. Schacht's new plan, to remedy it has caused widespread fear of inflation among the investing and the propertied classes, and the masses are discontented at the low wages. The Stahlhelms (Steel Helmets) have strongly resisted Hitlerism, especially in respect of anti-Semitism. If the Nazis dissolve the Stahlhelms' organisations throughout Germany it will be difficult to prevent > their reappearance in another form. Meanwhile the Nazis are concentrating on the Jews. General Daleuge,' a colleague of Count Helldorf, the newly-appointed Berlin Police Chief, denounces the Jews as criminals and declares that pickpockets are almost air Jews, who are also the principal drug traffickers, gaming-house proprietors and sponsors of other illegal activities.
