STRIKE IN INDIANA
60,000 WORKERS INVOLVED. FOOD POSITION SERIOUS. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12.45 p.m.) Terre Haute (Indiana), July 22. A general strike, called in sympathy with the 600 striking employees of the Enamel Plant Com- * pany, paralysed the city to-day and threatened to precipitate a critical food shortage within twenty-four hours. All deliveries of food supplies were stopped and stores closed rapidly as the strike leaders went through the city urging all workers to join the walkout, and they met with almost instant success since virtually every worker in the industries of the city belongs to a union. There has been no immediate violence, but the city officials have requested the National Guard to help to preserve peace. t It is estimated by the Union leaders that even the coal miners employed throughout the country have ioined the strike, thus bringing a total of sixty thousand persons who are on strike. Among the crafts and trades affected were food stores of all kinds, teamsters, hucksters, restaurants, barbers, oil refineries, building trades, hotel workers, trams,, and electric plants, The Enamel Plants strike has been of four months' duration.
