LLOYD GEORGES REPLY
TO GOVERMENT'S REFUSAL.
TO CONSIDER HIS "NEW DEAL."
(Press Association. (Received 12.20 p.m.)
London, July 22,
Mr. Lloyd George, replying to the Government's refusal to consider his "New Deal" proposals, denounces the boastful complacency with which it seemed to regard the economic conditio)!, despite the depressed areas and 2,000,000 unemployed. Mr. George stated: "The bulk of Cabinet's memorandum is taken up by a torchlight procession on its own achievements, and its criticisms are curious and cbntradictory. The Government in one breath cavils at my proposals and in the next suggests doing something similar on a minor scale. It is remarkable how it has ■given up the old argument that my development projects will cause financial embarrassment.
"In the Government's reply to my agricultural" proposals and to adopt free trade, its argument is most fantastical and in a most distorted form. Food prices would not rise it marketing was thoroughly organised. The producer would gain a certain market by ah increased demand and a reduction of distribution costs. Britain's purchases from the Dominions could be maintained at their present levels and increased production of milk, poultry and pigs would allow Britain to take considerably more cereals from the Empire countries.
"My policy would not mean cutting down the total imports. On the contrary, they would probably increase, owing to greater industrial activity."
