ELECTORAL ROLL
PURGING PROCESS IN TRAIN. THE PROCEDURE FOLLOWED. .'•'■■-. •• V'- ' The purging of the Waitomo Electoral Roll is at present being undertaken at the Te Kuiti Courthouse. About 10,000 inquiries have been sent out as to residence—asking what changes of address have been made. Replies have been received to a large proportion of these inqiries. Over a thousand people have indicated that they have changed their address to a place outside the electorate. These people are being informed by letter that they must register in their new electorate.; ■.- About the same number have replied indicating that they have changed their address inside the electorate. About 1500 letters sent out the registrar have been returnedjv*'rinclaimed. In all probability these people have left the district. In such cases this letted' is followed up by a registered, letter objecting to the retention of the namejSfcn.the roll. In* most cases the registered letter is also returned unclaimed, and under the provision of the Act, the registrar then removes the name from the roll. About 2000 people have not made any reply to the original inquiry. In such cases this is followed up by a registered letters and if still no reply is received the names are removed from the roll!? : * ..'. - s - About 4500 people .have- replied. stating that.they are still residing at the address mentioned in the roll. Those whose addresses, etc., were definitely known to thl registrar were not • included" in the inquiries sent forward. This had an immediate response, for it* brought in a "hornets' nest'" of inquiries as to whether people, not having received the notices, were still on the roll. . In addition to this, the purging is being conducted in other electorates, and as a result applications 'to be placed on the Waitomo Roll are, coming in at about 100 a day. . Much extra work has been necessitated Owing to electors failing tjo read the instructions on the forms correctly. For instance, the residential address, and not the postal address, is required. The PostmastersGeneral,, it is understood, would be very much surprised to know how many people lived in post offices or private bags! ■' .
