ACCIDENT IN QUARRY

MAN KILLED AT URUTI. EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. A verdict of accidental, death was returned on Thursday at the conclusion of an inquest into the death of George Wilson, a Waitoitoi labourer, who was killed on May 10 at the Public Works Department quarry at Uruti. Mr. J. F. Phillips, J.P., conducted the inquiry and the following jury was empanelled: Messrs. D. Tait, G. Salway, C. Willison and M. Jonas.

Medical evidence by Dr. R. L, Barclay showed that the cause of death had been a fracture at the base of the skull.

Evidence was also given by A. G. Grant and W. D. Telfar, workmates of Wilson, and by Constable J. Tocher. Grant and Telfar stated that when the accide'nt occurred, Wilson was working on the top floor of the quarry, which is 400 feet high. His barrow, partially filled with rubble, was standing about five feet from the edge of the cliff and was tilted towards it by the unevenness of the floor when Wilsoh placed two rocks on it to make up the full load. As the top-heavy barrow tipped on its side Wilson grabbed at the handle to prevent the stone from falling on the men working below. As he reached forward, however, he over-balanced and crashed down head-first on to the metal of the second floor of the quarry. He was killed instantly.
