CARROLL STREET SEWER

DECISION TO CONSTRUCT. ACCEPTANCE OF RAILWAYS’ OFFER. A decision to construct the CarrollTawliana Street sewer was made by the Te Kuiti Borough Council last evening, as a result of an offer made by the Railway Department. The total cost of this work will be £SOO, and provision for £l6O, estimated as the Borough’s share of the cost, is included in the draft estimates —the Railway Department will pay £290 and the Public Works Department £SO in proportion to the buildings served. From the Rora Street Corner to Carroll Street a main drain costing £340 of the cost mentioned will be necessary, and as new Borough houses are connected up the Borough will refund portions of this, until ultimately it will pay the whole. The service sewer will run between Carroll and Tawhana Streets to Seddon Street, in a 6 inch main, which will bei adequate to cope with future extensions. It will eliminate a most unhealthy sump drain behind the railway houses. It was pointed out that the Borough’s contribution of £l6O was estimated on the work being carried out by relief labour under the supervision of the Borough Engineer, and that £SO had been allowed to subsidise these men’s wages. On Cr. Low’s suggestion it was decided that the work be proceeded with, advantage being taken of the Railway Department’s offer to pay in instalments of £SO a year.
