AROUND THE BOROUGH
WORK AROUND BOROUGH. The following is the report for the month of November, submitted by the Borough Engineer, Mr. B. J. Drake, to the Council last evening. Most of the side roads throughout the Borough have been maintained during the month. Applications ofchips and shingle have evened up the surface and in most cases these roads are in good condition. Footpaths generally are receiving attention. Most of the growth is being cut back and any repair work necessary is being done. The following have been put in order to date: George Street, Carroll Street, Duke Street, Edward Street, Tawa Street, Jennings Street, and portion of the Esplanade. The other remaining footpaths should be completed within the next fortnight. The building at the Domain camping ground to be used for ladies' and gentlemen's showers is nearing completion. The work on this building should be completed within the forthcoming fortnight. Four new water services have been installed during the month, and two others have been*renewed. The work of installing a half-inch pipe in order to supply water to the cricket pitches has been completed. The corner of Queen Street and Carroll Street is now being improved, so that storm water may be diverted into the pipe drain which crosses Queen Street. Carroll Street-Queen Street corner: and also Carroll Street-Seddon Street corner: In order to seal these corners in a thorough manner with the minimum number of *• wearing edges, it will be necessary to seal approximately 1% chains of Carroll Street as well as the whole of the intersection to a point approximately half a chain up Queen Street and Seddon Street, the cost being £6l 5s for each corner.
Tawa Street-Matai Street corner: It would be necessary to seal approximately 2 chains of this corner in order to complete the length of the bend.
The estimated cost of this work being £33 10s and does not include any protrusion on to the Matai Street turn off other than a slight rounding off of the the shoulder with a seal.
Tawa Street-Jennings Street: In order to seal this corner a run from the present tar sealed portion to a point approximately 50 feet up Tawa Street would cost £l7 10s.
Esplanade-King Street: The cost of sealing this corner from the present tar sealing in King Street to a point approximately 33 feet along the Esplanade would be approximately £lB 16s. V
The Works Committee recommended to the Council that the Tawa Street-Matai Street corner be tarred, and that the sealing of the remaining corners be left in abeyance.
Both in Massey Street and Upper Queen Street there are at present five residences connected to a halfinch supply. This half-inch pipe has become badly corroded and with the advent of dry weather and low pressure, residents are experiencing difficulty with the domestic supply. In both localities an extension of a oneinch diameter pipe, in order to improve the domestic supply, would cost £ll.
