THE COST OF WAR

THE HORRORS IT INVOLVES. A STRIKING ADDRESS. BY ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 10.40 a.m.) Melbourne, this day. Stating that 15s in every pound of taxation was devoted to paying for past, present and future wars, the Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Rev. Richard Downey, delivered a striking address at the Town Hall. He said that each year sawt the progress of annihilation as the forces of chemistry and physics were harnessed to the chariot of car*nage. The world’s military bill was now £3,000,000 daily. Warfare had now changed from a clash of valorous men to a conflict of blindly destructive forces, and war no longer provided an hour of glorious life. The Archbishop said that education was the key to the solution of War. The peace movement should begin in the schools. History should not glorify militarism but expose the horrors of war. Exaggerated nationalism which despised foreigners should be eradicated, and its place taken by the spirit which recognised the brotherhood of man.
