MAIROA

TENNIS DANCE.

(Own Correspondent). The Mairoa Tennis Club held a dance in the school on Thursday evening. There was quite a good attendance. The school was nicely decorated with paper, streamers, greenery and flags. The floor was in good order and an enjoyable evening eventuated. Mr. Knapp was M.C., and Messrs. M. Dent, L. Murray and R. Knapp supplied the music. Novelty dances were in great evidence. One of the features of the evening was a large Christmas cake donated by Mrs. E. J. Smith for competition to help raise funds for the children's Christmas tree. The quality of this lady's cakes are well known, and much benefit is gained by competition which will take place on December 14. The winners of the novelty dances were: Lucky Spot Waltz, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Murray; Monte Carlo, Mr. E. Thomsen and Miss He'nderson; waltzing competition, Mr. P. Donnelly and Mrs. Murray. Mr. M. Dent supplied the music and Mr. McGinn was sole judge. There has been some good tennis practice put in of. late. The secretary, Mr. Knapp, has been arranging for some matches. The school court after the late rain will be in good order.

Hay paddocks are looking well just now now, but light. A good heavy rain would improve matters. Most of the shearing is done now. Woolgrowers will not welcome the present prices. It is to be hoped the lamb trade will be good or the cost of living will need to drop to balance the budget. A further batch of men for the relief camp have arrived. A good number, no doubt, will soon be away for Christmas week. The loose metal and wheel ruts are very uncomfortable on the roads at present, but are gradually getting fixed.
