AROUND THE BOROUGH

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following - is the report of the Borough Engineer, Mr. B. J. Drake, for the month of September. The report was submitted to the Council last evening.

Owing to the exceedingly dry spell experienced very little maintenance work has been required. Good progress has been made with the erection of a stone woodshed of the leanto type at the motor camp cookhouse. This should be completed during the week. Owing to the heavy growth on the Domain, it has been found advisable to have this cut and raked off immediately, after which the whole surface is to be rolled. The cost of cutting, etc., will be 30s. As soon as a suitable mower can be purchased it will be necessary to have the grass cut regularly. Good progress is being made with the preparatory work in connection with the proposed sealing of Awakino Road. So far, the construction work that has been done is excellent. Some weeks ago a shopkeeper was instructed to carry out certain repair work and alterations in connection with his premises. This work has not been carried out. I would, therefore, recommend that action to taken for failing to comply with the requisition as detailed in my letter of the 3rd July last. These premises have deteriorated rapidly and in their present condition are most unsuitable for the purposes for which they are used.

With reference to a compound recently constructed contrary to the Regulations for Dangerous Goods, it will be necessary to take action through the Department for Dangerous Goods. In building the compound in question the regulations were not adhered* to. The persons responsible have been interviewed and also written to on August 31st last, but the necessary alterations have not yet been carried out. It is imperative that the regulations of the Dangerous Goods Department be adhered to. Drainlayer's License: In accordance with the Plumbing and Draining Regulations of the Health Act, 1920, it is desirable that the following license fees be payable by all qualified drainlayers, viz., (1) Master drainlayer's license, £1 per annum; (2) Journeyman drainlayer's license, 10s per annum.
