AERO CLUB

NO CONTRIBUTION THIS YEAR. SUNDAY PICTURES APPROVED. A request for permission to hold a motion picture entertainment on a Sunday evening was received from the Te Kuiti Aero Club last evening by the Borough Council, while on behalf of the Club Cr. W. L. Lincoln asked if it would be possible for the Borough to make a grant to the club. In his letter to the Council Mr. H. T. Morton said that Te Kuiti was already recognised as the central airport of the North Island, the Mayor agreemg that there was no doubt that a great improvement had been made, though much still remained to be done.

Cr. O'Connell, referring to the request to screen pictures, reminded the Council "they had fallen in once before." Cr. Lincoln said that the manager of the theatre would guarantee that the picture shown "would come up to scratch," and if it was at all possible he would screen it for approval beforehand. After a short discussion Crs. Mullins and O'Connell were appointed a sub-committee to approve of the film. An application from Amalgamated Theatres requesting permission to screen on Christmas Day was declined on the motion of Cr. O'Connell, seconded by Cr. Lincoln. Cr. Lincoln, in asking for the Council to make a small donation towards the aerodrome, said at present an ordinary pilot -was not allowed to land in Te Kuiti as the ground was not licensed. The Mayor said that there was no doubt Te Kuiti would be a wide distributing centre in aviation, and it was a pity that the Borough could not have taken over the aerodrome itself. However, at present the finances were cut down to the limit. Cr. O'Connell said he did not think it right that ratepayers' money should be spent on work outside the Borough, however laudable the object. It was decided that the Borough could make no contribution to the club this year. Cr. Lincoln asked that the matter be considered when next year's estimates were being drawn up.
