SMALL FARM SCHEMES

VISIT BY MR. A. E. ANSELL, M.P. Mr. A. E. Ansell, M.P. for Port Chalmers, was a visitor to Te Kuiti during the week-end, and with Mr. W. J. Broadfoot visited Te Anga and the small farm development schemes at Ngatamahini, Lee's, and Pururu. Mr. Ansell said he was more than surprised at the scope there is for development in this district. He realised there was a big problem to solve in regard to Maori lands, and the matter would have to be dealt with some time. Mr. Ansell agreed that the first necessary step to solve the problem was the consolidation of the Maori's interests in their lands. The visitor was much impressed at the work that was being done at the small farms settlements in this district, especially in regard to the ' Pururu scheme at Rangitoto. He said the work being done reflected credit not only on those responsible for the supervision, but also on the men themselves who appeared to be taking a keen interest in the work. Mr. Ansell said that if the other such schemes were showing the same results in this district they should help in a partial solution of the unemployment problem. At the present time a herd of 50 cows is being milked at the Pururu Settlement and 100 at Ngatamahini. Messrs. Ansell and Broadfoot returned to Wellington by the Limited last night.
