RAGWORT CONTROL

PARASITE RESEARCH. Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., has been in communication with the Cawthron Institute with reference to ragwort control. The Chief Entomologist writes that-they are still continuing researches into the use of insects in the control of this weed, and he is of opinion that they are now on the track of satisfactory results, although there is a considerable amount of preliminary work yet to be done.

The insect which he considers to be of the greatest importance is a little fly, the maggot of which destroys 100 per cent, of the seeds in every seed head infested. The enormous value of such an insect can be readily realised in checking the spreading of the weed, the seed of which is carried by the wind. He had hoped to be in a position to commence liberating at the close of the present season, but unforeseen difficulties presented themselves which, delayed the work. Immediately they were in a position to commence establishing the insect in the field they would do so without delay.
