In the first innings with Ceylon, Australia declared with 6 wickets down for 286, Bromley being highest scorer with 80 not out.

Ceylon are 5 wickets down for 125, Jayawickrena hitting up 56. Ebeling took 3 of the wickets for only 24 runs. Half an hour in the tropic sun was the limit of the endurance of most of the Australian batsmen. Bromley s' 80 is a record for the Australians in Ceylon.
