G. W. Settle, of the United States Navy, and Major L. Fordney, of the Marine Corps, took off at 9.27 on Monday morning, expecting to rise 36,000 feet in a few hours. Attaining a height in excess of 58,000 feet, according to the altimeter inside the gondola, Commander Settle and Major Fordney late on Monday began a descent in their huge balloon, intending to land near Washington.
