ATTEMPT TO SOLVE MYSTERY. by' U.S.A. NAVAL EXPERTS. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 11.45 a.m.) Akron (Ohio), November 20. Seeking to penetrate the mystery of the cosmic ray, Commander T. G. W. Settle, of the United States Navy, and Major L. Fordney, of the Marine Corps, took off at 9.27 on Monday morning, expecting to rise 36,000 feet in a few hours. Attaining a height in excess of 58,000 feet, according to the altimeter inside the gondola, Commander Settle and Major Fordney late on Monday began a descent in their huge balloon, intending to land near Washington.
