SPANISH ELECTIONS

FASCISTI SUCCESSES. THREAT BY SOCIALISTS. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 10.25 a.m.) Madrid, November 20. Candidates elected include all General De Rivera’s Fascist Deputies and Senor Barreto, a director of the Fascist newspaper; also Count Romanones, Premier of Barrios. Those defeated are Senor Albornoz, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senor Avello, Minister of the Interior, and Senor Feced, Minister of Agriculture. Thus far 219 out of the 473 seats have been filled. The election appears to have ended in a stalemate. The Socialists, Communists, and extremists are incensed at the verdict, some declaring that a revolution is still coming and they will fight it out in the streets if the election decision is adverse to them. It is officially stated that owing to the confused situation any advance intimation of the elections returns is impossible. A second ballot will be necessary in thirty-five of the total forty-nine provinces. Apparently the Conservatives lead in Madrid and the Radicals are far behind, but even here a second count on 3rd December will probably be necessary, as it is uncertain whether any candidate obtained 40 per cent of the votes necessary for election. Meanwhile each party claims a victory based on purely artificial figures, but estimates of the state of parties must be purely conjectural. INTENSE TENSION. FEAR OF REVOLUTIONARY STRIKE. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 12.10 p.m.) Madrid, November 20. . There is acute tension throughout Spain and many people have been killed and wounded. Cabinet has -discussed methods for maintaining order, as it is feared that the Socialists are preparing a revolutionary general strike.
