METHODIST TENNIS CLUB
OPENING OF SEASON. At the opening of the Methodist tennis courts yesterday a very large crowd assembled, with visitors from all parts of the district, including Otorohanga. This year a second court has been added beyond the other, and with a good membership and the extra court it is expected that the Methodist Club are going to make others look to their laurels. The Rev. J. L. Mitchell officiated at the opening ceremony. After a short prayer he thanked the visitors for their attendance, and congratulated the Club on the new r , court and on the way the old one had been worked up afresh. Referring to the fact that tennis was one of the oldest of ball games, he pointed out that about five hundred years ago the game became so nopular that the monarch of the day was constrained to nrevent it being played by issuing a royal decree, it not being until the re ; gn of Henry the Seventh that the ban was lifted. "Happily, I don't th:'nk that such a measure is likely nowadays," said the speaker as he declared the courts open for play. After Mrs. Boyes drove off the first ball, play was continued until late in the afternoon.
