The capture of Briastre by New Zealand troops fighting on the Western front occurred 15 years ago. Following a number of other successes, the achievement was the subject of a tribute paid by a special correspondent of The Times in a dispatch published in that newspaper on October 14, 1918. "North of here, by Briastre," he wrote, "New Zealanders, who have done magnificently in this battle, were fighting. Since their capture of Welsh Ridge, the Bonavis Spur, and La Vacquerie in the first days of the advance, Crevecoeur has fallen to them after heavy fighting, as well as Lesdain, Esnes, Fontaine, Beauvois, Viesly and Briastre. It is a great record. From Briastre the New Zealanders went on up the high ground beyond, capturing Bellevue on the right."
