PAINFUL ACCIDENT

SEVERE BURNS SUSTAINED. DANGERS OF BENZINE. A painful accident befell Mrs. John Wilson, of Hospital Road, on Sunday morning, when the copper fire in the washhouse at her home flared back to ignite her dress. Mrs. Wilson had been called away from the washhouse for a little while and when she returned the fire had burned low. She took the copper stick and was poking the fire up when it suddenly flared back and ignited her dress. Before she could extinguish the flames. Mrs. Wilson was badly burned about the arms, face and neck. Neighbours came in and called the Fire Brigade, but the fire did not spread and was extinguished before they arrived. The damage done to the washhouse was not extensive. Mrs. Wilson was immediately conveyed to the Hospital, and it is reported that she passed a good night. It is understood that her injuries, though very painful, are not serious. The copper stick had been used for washing overalls in benzine not long before. The water in the copper was not deep, so that there would probably be a strip of the copper stick saturated with benzine. It is thought that the copper fire ignited this benzine and thus flared back along the stick.
