REP. FOOTBALL

MANIAPOTO v. OTOROHANGA.

OTOROHANGA’S IMPROVED DISPLAY. In the return match played on the Te Kuiti Domain between Otorohanga and Maniapoto, q good game resulted in the latter winning by 25 points to 11. Otorohanga put up a far better display than in the previous match between these two subunions. The forward packs were fairly even, Maniapoto held a slight advantage in the scrum and line-outs, but on the whole there was little to pick and choose between them. It was in the backs that Maniapoto had the definite advantage, in spite of the good work done by McVay and Quin. Tilley and Rata both played good games, and although Maniapoto were unlucky in losing the services of B. Wallace early in the game through the breaking of his leg, the reserve, Taitoko, played a good game. Weo was out of his place when behind the pack, yet nevertheless handed the ball out well. Otorohanga also were unlucky in losing Ditchings through concussion a little later. Maniapoto lost ground through numerous infringements all through the game. There is no doubt that Otorohanga is a greatly improved team; it has been altered round a great deal since the last game with Maniapoto. The latter team, on the other hand, is practically the same, Rees taking Gilbert’s place and Kawe being included in the forwards.

For Otororohanga Quin and McVay were prominent in the backs, and Hulten, St. Clair and Bremner in the forwards, while Rata, Tilley and Taitoko in the backs and Remnant, Thomas, Kawe and Meredith in the forwards did good work for Maniapoto. It was a fine day and the ground was perfectly dry. The following were the teams: — Maniapoto (Green and White). — McLeod, Tilley, Barlow, Weo Wetere, Rees, J. Rata, B. Wallace, Riddle, Remnant, Kawe, A. Smith, B. Meredith, Thomas, Armstrong, Brown.

Otorohanga (Black and White). — Hitchings, Quin, Fisher, Roberts, Kino, Warren, McVay, Kempthome, Craig, Little, Tane, Carter, St. Clair, Hulten, G. Bremner. Mr. J. Sheppard was. referee. Otorohanga played with the slight wind during the first half. From the kick-off two line-outs resulted at half way. Then, from a scrum, Maniapoto took the ball downfield, but a penalty was awarded against them. Hitchings kicked to McLeod, who fumbled, and the ball went out. The Oto. forwards broke through, but McLeod saved, and, following the line-out, Rata came up with the the ball at his toe. Craig, however, secured and found the line. Another nenalty was awarded to Oto. and Warren found the line in the Maniapoto 25 . Following a scrum Weo tried to come up the line, but was forced out, and Brown and Meredith from the line-out came through, but the latter over-ran. Bremner took a penalty for Oto. and put it out again in the 25. Oto. were pressing hard about this time. They took the ball across the field, but Weo put it out. Oto. tried again and passed from the half to the wing, but the latter. was smothered by Weo, and Maniapoto took the ball upfield towards halfway. McLeod fumbled when I’eceiving a kick and had to put the ball out on the 25 line. Meredith and Brown came through with the ball at their toes., but were again stopped by Hitchings. The ball went out to the Maniapoto backs but the attack broke down at Rees, and following a kick up by the Oto. forwards McLeod found the line about half-way. Rata took the ball well and beat several men, and Weo missed the pass, the ball going- out about midfield. Then Quin secured and came round, but his. kick missed the line and went behind, McLeod forcing. Oto. had the better of the game so far, but now the position changed. Tilley and Weo gave a line-kick each to bring play upfield, and then Barlow kicked through and he and Thomas, following up, caught an Oto. man in possession. In the resulting- scramble the ball went to Rata to Tilley, and the latter took it into the Oto. 25. From the lineout Wallace gave the ball to Rata, who did some nice work, cutting out three men, and a score resulted near the posts. Tilley converted. Maniapoto 5; Otorohanga 0.

Soon after the kick-off Kino missed and Brown, Remnant and Thomas came through with a passing’ rush, but were stopped when the latter knocked on in the Oto. 25. Smith and Meredith broke through but Oto. forced. Shortly after the drop-out play was suspended on account of Wallace’s injury, about ten minutes elapsing before it was resumed. Taitoko went on to the wing in Weo’s place, the latter playing half. Oto. started off with a penaltv taken by Bremner from the Oto. 25. McLeod took it, and returned to Warren. The latter gave it to Kino, to Roberts, and the ball went out. Another penalty and Oto. gained midfield, but Maniapoto came through, Rata tackling Kino, and Meredith came up to pass to Tilley. However, after a run by the latter the attack failed, Oto. kicking to McLeod, who put it in the 25. In reply to a high kick by Warren, McLeod found the corner. Another penalty taken by Bremner against Maniapoto took play up, but a back movement, in which the ball went out to the wing*, again sent play to the corner. However, a 25 drop-out resulted, but the ball was kicked right out and play brought back for a scrum. Tane got the ball but was collared, and Smith headed a dribbling rush which put it out at the corner. Quin came up, but the ball was still in the 25 when it went out. Then Weo, evidently of the opinion that the referee was. on his side, despite the penalties against Maniapoto, lobbed a pass forward gently into him Brown came through, but the ball was kicked too hard, Hitchings foreing. From the drop-out the ball went to mid-field, where Rata was caught in possession. Meredith was offside and the kick brought Oto. further up. The Maniapoto backs tried, but the attack stopped at Rees. The

Oto. forwards were on the ball now and a scrum near the line resulted. They broke through, but Rata saved and found the line. Following an atattempt by Maniapoto to open up, Carter put the ball out. However, Riddle caught McVay in possession, and Remnant found touch in Oto. territory. Quin picked up well, but Thomas caught him and play moved upfield. Then Weo gave the ball out to Rata, who made a nice run to give it to Barlow, the latter scoring near the posts. Play was suspended on account of Hitchings’ concussion. He was replaced by J. Bremner. Tilley’s kick was successful. Maniapoto 10; Otorohanga 0. Tilley missed the kick, and the Oto. forwards, working together, came up. However, Maniapoto retaliated in like manner, Quin saving. Weo tried to run on the blind side, but was forced out. Then Oto. were awarded a penalty kick within a few feet of half-way. Kino, with a magnificent kick, put it between the posts. Maniapoto 10; Otorohanga 3. Soon after the kick-off a passing rush from Rata to Barlow, to Taitoko gained ground, the latter putting the ball out. Weo got the ball from the scrum and put in a short punt to McVay, who found touch still in the Oto. 25. Then Weo gave the ball out, the back line all handling, but Rees was held up when almost over by a knock-on. From two line-outs Oto. came through, but Riddle and Taitoko successively saved. Then Kempthorne kicked the ball out upfield. A couple of penalties helped Oto., -and play went down to Maniapoto ground. Then Oto. came down in a forward rush. Maniapoto failed to get down to it, and Oto. went over near the posts, Hulten scoring. Kino converted. Maniapoto, 10; Otorohanga 8. After half-time Tilley, as usual, put the ball behind the line and Oto. forced. Oto. brought to the centre of the field, but McVay was collared by Thomas, and Riddle, came through with the ball at his toe. Kawe picked up to make a dive for the line, but missed, and a five-yard scrum was ordered. From there the Oto. forwards brought up to the centre of the field. Following a duel of kicks, the Oto. forwards came through, and the ball went out near the corner, but Rata and Rees made play move upfield.. McVay, from the line-out, kicked to the 25, and Bremner broke through, but Rata saved to find touch upfield. Tilley got the ball to pass to Taitoko to Barlow but the latter fumbled. Rata collected, but was smothered. Tilley got the ball, but, after a run across the field “remained collared for some time.” Remnant got the ball from the ruck and found the line near the 25. The Maniapoto backs got away and the attack broke at Rees. Oto. tried their backs also, but the ball stopped at Kino. Maniapoto were penalised, and Kino, from about midfield, tried to emulate his former feat, but was unsuccessful. McLeod’s kick made play revert to halfway. Rata got the ball, and with Taitoko, made a good run, and a good chance was lost when the latter passed forward. However, Weo got possession and drop-kicked a nice goal from the 25. Maniapoto, 14; Otorohanga, 8. From the kick-off Riddle found the line, but a penalty put play in the Maniapoto area. The ball went from Weo, to Rata, the latter kicking. Quin received and came round, and Thcmas forced him to put it out. Maniapoto came through in a forward rush, headed by Remnant, the ball going out. Barlow got the ball nicely on the run, but was pulled down, and play went near the Oto. 25 line. Then the ball went out to the backs, Tilley making a good run down the line to in-pass to Rata, giving the latter an opening, which he took advantage of. Tilley’s kick missed. Maniapoto, 17; Otorohanga 8. The Maniapoto forwards, headed by Thomas and Meredith came down. Rees picked up, but was forced out near the corner. From the line-out the ball went cleanly from Weo to Taitoko, to Tilley, the latter scoringwell out from the posts. His kick missed. Maniapoto, 20; Otorohanga, 8. The Oto. forwards came down from the kick-off but Remnant saved. Meredith led the Maniapoto forwards in breaking through, and the ball went out near the 25. Oto., helped by Tane, centred play, but Meredith came through again. Taitoko got the ball to give it to Rees, who found the corner. Soon after McLeod’s dropkick at the goal missed, and Craigkicked up field. Warren intercepted and the ball went to midfield. Kino got the ball to pass to Roberts, who made a good run, and Fisher scored. Bremner’s kick missed. Maniapoto, 20; Otorohanga, 11. Carter brought the ball up. The Oto. forwards were pressing hard, but Thomas came through with the ball at his toe. However, Oto. still came on, Tane being in the van. McLeod collected and put the ball out near the corner, and from the line-out Maniapoto forced. From the drcp-out Taitoko took the ball out of danger. Rata beat Kino and went upfield, to be stopped finally on the Oto. 25 line. The Maniapoto forwards got into it, and followingsome good work by Meredith, Kawe picked up and dived over. McLeod converted. Maniapoto, 25; Otorohanga, 11. Penalties against Maniapoto, 18. Penalties against Otorohanga, 3. Scrums.—Won Maniapoto, 9; won Otorohanga 5; indecisive, 9. Line-outs. —Won Maniapoto, 9; won Otorohanga, 7; indecisive, 12.

MANGAPEEHI v. WAITETE.

The junior match between Waitete and Mangapeehi, played as. a curtain-raiser to the representative game on the Domain, proved an interesting match, resulting in a draw. Some time after play started Farrell came up from a back movement and scored. The kick failed. Almost straight away, however, the .Waitete forwards went down the field and over, Smith scoring. Serancke’s kick was successful. The score was still 5—3 to Waitete when the whistle went for half-time. Waitete were the next to score, Emery going over from a forward

rush. Serancke’s kick just missed. However, it was not long before Mangapeehi retaliated, R. Auckett crossing the line. Neil converted with a good kick. Some strenuous work resulted in the few minutes left to play, but the score remained at 8 all. Mr. Dudson was referee. The report of the junior rep. match between Otorohanga and Maniapoto appears on page 7.
